Interactive Polyharmonizer

Solo flute, single microphone, Kyma
Flute performance by Lana Stafford

This system uses Kyma to process a live flute signal in real time. The monophonic input is split into multiple simultaneous voices, each assigned independent timbral, temporal, and spatial parameters.

Harmonic structures may be preconfigured and advanced via foot controller, or shaped improvisationally through an additional keyboard interface. The system functions as a performable instrument rather than a post-processing effect, allowing ensemble-like polyphonic behaviour to emerge while preserving the gestural immediacy of the acoustic flute.

Real-time control enables adjustment of harmonic density, spatial distribution, and timbral variation during performance.

Future development would focus on deriving additional control data directly from the live signal—such as pitch tracking, amplitude, duration, and spectral features—to increase expressive responsiveness. The incorporation of multiple microphones could further expand available spectral information.
